Southern Chesapeake Leukemia Cup Regatta
Leukemia Cup Regatta: Great Success!
The 16th Annual Southern Chesapeake Leukemia Cup Regatta held July 11-13, 2014 at Deltaville Maritime Museum was a huge success. There were 64 registered yachts and enthusiastic crowds at the auction and gala over the weekend. Many skippers, crew, participants, and guests were treated to gorgeous weather and delightful breezes…rare for July!
Although fundraising results are still being tabulated, approximately $137,000 in cash and “in kind” donations have been raised for this year’s very worthy mission. Thanks to the generosity of donors and sponsors, the LLS is able to continue to fund blood cancer research, patient programs, and promote advocacy on behalf of all blood cancer patients.
The Leukemia Cup Regatta is a thrilling series of sailing events that take place all over the country each year. The event in Deltaville is one of the most successful such regattas in the country having raised almost two million dollars since the year 2000. Three consecutive times the Southern Chesapeake Leukemia Cup Regatta has been named the Best Regatta by readers of Chesapeake Bay Magazine.
The LLS (Leukemia & Lymphoma Society) Grant programs are among the most prestigious in the fields of hematology and oncology. The Leukemia Cup Regatta helps to raise awareness of this little known fact. Every three minutes, someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer. In the early 1980’s the survival rate of ALL, the most common kind of blood cancer in children, had a poor cure rate. Today, 91% of the children stricken with ALL will be cured. This fact gives anyone dealing with a blood cancer hope that more cures are on the horizon. Therefore, we raise sails to fund the research for cures and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. For more information www.lls.org.
