Basic Sailing (ASA 101)

The new sailor will learn the skills required for safe handling of a moderate sized, tiller or wheel-steered keelboat in sheltered waters. Learn terminology, equipment, sailing theory, points of sail, proper commands, man-overboard, docking, knots, and traffic rules. Inboard auxiliary experience is included.
Basic Sailing 101 is a 15 hour class and may be taken over a weekend or during the week.

Coastal Cruising (ASA 103)

With the basics in place, the sailor will be able to cruise safely in local and regional waters as skipper or crew on an auxiliary powered sailboat of moderate size. Focus will be on wheel steering techniques and handling under power. Learn seamanship, emergency handling, gear & equipment, marine weather, anchoring, heaving to, reefing, docking and much more. Coastal Cruising 103 is a 15 hour class and may be taken over a weekend or during the week.

Combination Basic Sailing & Coastal Cruising (ASA 101 & 103)

By far our most popular course, combo ASA 101 & 103 allows the sailor to be certified in two areas in two consecutive weekends, or 4 days mid- week. Special pricing has been implemented for this combo course – save $250.00! Combination 101 & 103 is a 30 hour course and may be taken over two consecutive weekends or 4 days during mid-week.

Challenge Certification (ASA-101 & ASA-103)

Any individual may challenge (101) and (103) by taking the appropriate exam and demonstrating skills on the water. If the individual passes, certificates will be issued. This is testing only–NO INSTRUCTION. If failure occurs, the individual may apply the fee to the tuition for the specific course

Bareboat Chartering (ASA 104)

This is an ADVANCED cruising standard for skipper & crew on a 30′ to 50′ boat sailing by day in coastal waters. Topics covered are living aboard, weather, seamanship, various anchoring techniques, use of electronics, and piloting techniques. The student will cruise for 48 hours on his/her boat with the instructor who will guide and give moral support to the student. This course consists of 2 nights at anchor where a review of each day is discussed. Bareboat Chartering 104 is a 48 hour class. This course is available at limited times, upon the discretion of the instructor and number of students that are interested. Ask Norton Yachts for further details.

5 Days Basic-To-Bareboat (ASA 101, 103 & 104)

This course allows the sailor to earn 3 certifications in just 5 days! Learn to Captain your own sailing yacht on this live-aboard “cruise and learn” vacation. Our friendly & experienced instructors will help you develop your skills and confidence while you enjoy real-world cruising in one of the finest cruising grounds in the world. This course is taught on a new mid-size Hunter and includes books, exams and instructor, while the boat includes linens and towel, provisioning is up to the students. This course is available at limited times, please call for further details and scheduling.

Coastal Navigation (ASA 105)

This comprehensive course will enable the sailor or power-boater to safely navigate a vessel in coastal or inland waters. The course covers chart reading, buoyage, lights, bearings & fixes, dead reckoning, set & drift, tides & currents, signals, and much more. The student should bring dividers, parallel rule, pencils & notebook. This course is taught solely in the classroom, however an opportunity to apply theory on a 48 hour cruise will be available with the Bareboat Chartering course agenda. Because no sea time is required, Norton’s offers this class during the winter months of January, February, and March. Additional classes may be scheduled on a case-by-case basis. This 32 hour course is taught over two consecutive weekends

Advanced Coastal Cruising (ASA 106)

This is an advanced coastal cruising course for a skipper and crew on a 30′ to 50′ sailing boat in coastal waters. Learn the ability to safely act as skipper and crew of a sailing vessel about 30 to 50 feet in length. This is a day and nighttime Standard in coastal and inland water, in any weather. This course is a 30 hour course that consist of three days and two nights and is taught on his/her boat with the instructor on board to guide and instruct. This course is available at limited times, determined by the number of students that are interested. Ask Norton Yachts for further details.
