Here is the latest on the Broad Creek Middlesex County maintenance dredging
effort: 12-9-09

The earthwork contract for the upland dredged material placement site
rehabilitation is nearing completion.

The sleeve pipe that is needed to allow the effluent water pipeline to return
to Broad Creek will soon be installed underneath highway 33.

The contractor has the VDOT permit to allow installation under the highway.

There may be minor traffic delays along the highway during this installation.

The dredging contract was awarded on November 16th to Southwind Construction.

The Corps will issue the dredging contractor a notice to proceed once the
upland site rehabilitation is satisfactorily completed and accepted.

This afternoon the Corps completed the pre-construction conference with the
contractor.

Southwind plans to do all the work with no subcontract assistance.

They plan to use a dredge called “Jenni Lea 2.”

Southwind’s dredge is currently starting dredging at Winter Harbor in Mathews
County, another Corps project.

They will start dredging at Broad Creek once the Winter Harbor project is
completed.

Assuming all goes well (including satisfactory completion of the upland site
rehabilitation and no unusually weather delays at Winter Harbor) Southwind
plans deliver their dredge at Broad Creek on January 4th.

Southwind expects that some navigation aids will need to be moved a little
bit during dredging. They will coordinate any navigation aid issues with the
Coast Guard.

According to Doug Stamper of the Corps, “If the current plan continues without disruption would expect the dredging
to be completed by late January-early February.”
